This feels like a story we have read before. The Toronto Maple Leafs top line is nearly unstoppable, but there are a lot of questions behind them. The Edmonton Oilers woes are well documented, since they are on the wrong side of the questions right now. Having Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl is not enough to drag an NHL team deep into the playoffs. It might seem like Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner can, but this does not feel sustainable. Everyone in the hockey world is waiting for teams to pull the trigger on some big trades to bolster ranks and we only have a couple weeks left until the trade deadline. Things might change quickly around here, so make sure to subscribe and make sure you stay abreast of the changing tides.

Thatcher Demko and the Vancouver Canucks along with their opponents, the Montreal Canadiens, have both experienced a renaissance over the course of the year. They turned poor starts into some exciting runs with big wins over big teams. This should be a fun one to watch, but we are leaning towards the Nucks and Demko.
Bo Horvat is a great captain for this team that still has some time to work out its kinks. They are a relatively young team and are only a couple points out of the playoff race at the moment. We believe in Horvat’s ability to battle through adversity and get one more Canadian team into the post-season.
Brock Boeser has seen a steady increase in shots per game this season and those shots are being rewarded with more points. His team may end up being sellers at the deadline and Boeser’s new contract may make him the odd man out. He will be fighting for his team but also for his own value moving forward in his career.

You can save $300 and take Elias Pettersson who has been improving his game even more than Boeser has. He had hit one of the hardest slumps we have ever seen in a superstar in the making. This team knows what it has to do and Petey will be fully on board to make that happen.
Alexander Ovechkin is the only top tier winger out there today and with how cheap the last couple guys were you should be able to afford him. He scored two more goals last night tying the great Jaromir Jagr in goals all time. It was bound to happen but your trusty writer still felt it hit home. Jagr is our favorite player and it is crazy that we are still using the present tense because he is still playing at 50 years old, even if it is in his homeland and not here. Ovi will likely do the same in the KHL some day. But for now he has more records to beat.
If you are looking to offset those costs then dig deep into Washington’s roster and take Conor Sheary. He only shows as third line, but he is important on their second power play and we have been generally surprised with how often we see his name pop up. Anthony Mantha is right there with him on the power play and does play on the line up with Nicklas Backstrom who is one of the best setup men the game has ever seen.
Hopefully we can still afford a couple of the top defensemen. Darnell Nurse is always a favorite for us and you know how we have relied on Quinn Hughes in the past. If you are needing to save a little bit then we should mention both Martin Fehevary and Alexander Romanov. Both of these guys have quickly worked their way to the top pairing and what they currently lack in scoring expertise, they make up with big time physicality.
We said we would try and afford you both of the top defenseman and so we have more shiny trinkets from the bottom of the chest. Conor Sheary is on a tear right now. The Caps third line may not look like much but Connor McMichael will be a name you see here in a couple years and Lars Eller is an above average centerman that just gets things done.
The last couple wingers you will need to make choices from are Kevin Fiala and Alex Killorn. Fiala has quickly dipped below Kaprizov’s shadow but has still been generating a ton of offense and is having a very good campaign. Killorn continues to benefit from being in Tampa’s top 6.
Wow, that went fast. It is so much easier when there are only a couple of games to sift through. Those 12 game days can be tough to slog through, but you know we still love it because we keep finding you diamonds in the rough. Check out the Twitter (@FantasyDFSX) and have a great Wednesday. Ciao
