NHL DFS Picks For December 31, 2021

Alex Ovechkin DFS
PITTSBURGH, PA - MARCH 07: Washington Capitals Left Wing Alex Ovechkin (8) celebrates with the bench after Washington Capitals Right Wing T.J. This is coming out a little later than we hoped so we are forced to just pick from the two late games today. There is plenty of goodness to be had there and we are very intrigued by the New York Rangers matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Tampa got destroyed by Florida last night and will be licking their wounds today. We do not normally pick against them but this is a golden chance. On top of that we are taking the Washington Capitals over the Detroit Red Wings. Pretty easy math there.

Here’s a metro lineup For DFS Hockey 12/31/21 (using DraftKings Values)

Center
Center
WingA. Ovechkin$9,200

DefenseJ. Trouba$5,100
Defense
GoalieI. Shesterkin$7,500
Utility

Alex Ovechkin is 36 years old and is still selling more jerseys than anyone else in the league. Russian machine never breaks. He is still managing to put up obscene shot totals and you are almost guaranteed one will go in. McDavid may be the best overall player in the world, but Ovi is the greatest.

Jacob Trouba is another guy who puts up a lot in the peripheral department. He takes his shots and blocks a lot of them as well. He is a prototypical heavy defenseman with a great shot. He may only show about half a point per game but there were several games there where nothing happened. His ceiling is a little higher than that.

As for the goalie today we are going to lean on Igor Shesterkin. This is a bit of a gamble playing against one of the best teams in the league, but Tampa got shelled last night, are on their backup goalie and we like the Rangers offense overall.

Both Mika Zibenajad and Ryan Strome are good picks tonight. Strome gets thrown under the bus a lot and we do not totally understand why. He is a second line center, that is it. He does not need to be a point per game player and is not. He manages to keep Artemi Panarin happy and can work with whoever else is on his wing. Mika is taking his shots, they just are not going in. His shooting percentage this year is only 9% and that is criminally low for him. The puck luck will turn around soon.

Does anyone not love T.J. Oshie? This good ole American boy still keeps an insanely high productivity level after years in this brutal game and having his body destroyed in the process. He still hits the ice with a smile and makes things happen when no one else can. Keep it up, kid.

From the Red Wings we are taking a long look at Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider. They slowed down a bit since the beginning of the season but Raymond has worked his way to the top line and Seider does not go a game without a couple blocks and shots. We still do not expect them to win tonight but these two could do some damage.

To round out your utility spot we have Kaapo Kakko or Conor Sheary. Sheary had himself quite a point streak and is very under most people’s radar. Kakko is still waiting on his big breakout but he is up on the top line for now and access to Zibby is always good for the career.
