DFS MLB Baseball Picks for August 22, 2021

Nick Castellanos

We have ten games today with the first pitch at 1:05 PM EST. Today’s slate of games is highlighted by Luis Robert and the Chicago White Sox, taking on Nelson Cruz and the Tampa Bay Rays in Tampa Bay. The highest implied run totals tonight sit with the Toronto Blue Jays (6.2), Atlanta Braves (5.6), and the Milwaukee Brewers (5.5).

The Game between the Yankees and the Twins has been postponed due to rain, and there is a 16-20 percent chance of rain in Baltimore for the game between the Orioles and the Braves, so that game could be delayed or postponed.

Here is a selection of today’s Core Players 50-50 MLB DFS lineup for 8/22/21 (using DraftKings Values)

 PitcherAdam Wainwright $9,300
 Pitcher
 CatcherManny Piña $4,100
 First Base
 Second Base
 Third Base
 Short StopCarlos Correa $4,800
 OutfieldYordan Alvarez $5,500
 Outfield
 OutfieldNick Castellanos $4,800

Adam Wainwright-  P  ($9,300) – Wainwright continues to impress. He has now gone six games without giving up more than three runs, and in that stretch, we have seen him strike out at a minimum of five batters, and at a maximum of eight batters. He has a great matchup today going against the Pirates as well that certainly helps boost his win potential.

Manny Piña– C  ($4,100) – The use of Piña today is a matchup play. He will be facing a Nationals starter today in Sean Nolin, who didn’t fare well in his first start, giving up four runs and eight hits in three innings.

Carlos Correa–SS ($4,800) – Correa has multi-hit games in three of his last four, and four of his last six games. In his last four games, he has also chipped in a double and a triple. This is a good matchup today for Correa going up against a left-handed starter whom he has hit 0.298 against this year.

Yordan Alvarez – OF ($5,500) In Alvarez’s last three games he has five hits, two home runs, and a double. Much like his teammate, Correa, he hits left-handed pitching better than right-handed, so it could be another big day for Alvarez.

Nick Castellanos  – OF ($4,800)  Castellanos now has three straight multi-hit games, and he has hit home runs in two of his last five games. With the Reds at home, getting a hitter like Castellanos can really pay off, especially when his price is below 5k.

The Pitchers

Vladimir Gutierrez ($8,000) It has now been five straight starts for Gutierrez where he has given up two runs or less. He is only striking out five batters on average in that span but if he can give you six-plus innings with five strikeouts and get a win you will be quite happy at his price.

Steven Matz ($8,200) – In four of Matz’s last three starts he hasn’t given up a run. He will be facing a Tigers lineup that isn’t overly intimidating today, so I would look for Matz to have a good start and have a good chance to get the win as well.

Carlos Hernández ($5,900) – Hernández is coming off a poor start against the Astros, but in his three previous starts he had given up one run or less going up against the White Sox and the Yankees. He will face a Cubs team today that doesn’t’ have half the offense of those other three teams so he is worth a look if you’re looking to save some money with one of your pitchers.

The Value Players

Ty France ($3,600) – There is a lot to like about France’s value. He has seven hits in his last three games, to go along with two home runs and a double. Look for the Mariners to have a better performance today, and France to be a part of that.

Aledmys Díaz –3B ($3,800) – We have seen the Astros use Díaz all over the field recently, but he has been consistently hitting either fourth or fifth in the batting order. In his last two games, he has five hits with two doubles, which well exceeds the value of his price tag.

Tyler Naquin – OF  ($2,900) – The value of Naquin is one of, if not the best on the slate. He is very cheap, and he has multi-hit games in four of his last five games, at least a hit in his last eleven games, and specifically, in his last two games, he has three doubles a triple, and a home run.

The Stacks

Cincinnati Reds – We discussed Naquin and Castellanos, but you can add in Joey Votto if you have the budget space, or Kyle Farmer if you need to save some budget with your Reds stack.

Houston Astros – Not a whole lot to talk about with the Astros today, Vegas isn’t showing them much love today, but they as noted with the three hitters we discussed hit lefties well, so don’t be afraid to take advantage of that today.

Atlanta Braves – When I’m looking at Braves stacks today, I‘m looking at Dansby Swanson, Austin Riley, and Jorge Soler. You could also use Joc Pederson who has hit lefties this year as well.
