By now, you likely have read that the PGA tour just announced that there will be no patrons on the course for the rest of the calendar year. Jack’s invitational event was to the the first event where fans would be mingling with PGA Tour players since golf’s return from COVID-19 isolation. Golf has been one of sport’s best come-back stories so far in this pandemic despite a number of players coming down with the powerful virus. Protecting that golf doesn’t have to be shut down again is likely a prudent decision by the powers-that-be to protect the game until the “curve is bent down” like we are seeing in Asia and Europe and ultimately until a vaccine is approved and readily distributed.
The DFS Field and The Course at The Memorial: 2020
Much like The Genesis in Pacific Palisades, California, which is now Tiger’s invitational, The Memorial has 120 players versus the traditional 148 players on a PGA Tour stop. And those players are a literally who’s who of the world’s best including, yes… you guessed it – Eldric.
DFS betting this week at The Memorial has that “Major feel” to it in that many kick-ass players will simply not be able to make the cut the way they might at the 2000 Flushes Open on a different week.
Muirfield Village is a monster of a golf course that Jack Nicklaus designed for the express purpose of highlighting who is the best golfer in the world. The rough is long and the holes are longer. Water is everywhere and there are plenty of trees. The finish comes with a predictable dog-leg right par-4 as all Nicklaus courses do. This week could very well favor the big bombers.
A-List DFS Picks at The Memorial: 2020
Looking over the top of the field, it is just an embarrassment of riches to choose from this week which can sometimes be more of a curse than a blessing in that not all of these studs are going to make waves in Columbus this week. Need proof: look at Brooks Koepka last week who missed the cut.
Bryson DeChambeau ($11,100) is at the top of the pile and for good reason. He’s making nearly all of his cuts, won two weeks ago and has nine Top 10s in 14 attempts. Oh, and he now hits a golf ball like Barry Bonds when he just got on The Clear and The Cream. Hard to see how you can go wrong with the most expensive guy on the board.
Webb Simpson ($9,600) is crushing it this year and should continue when he lands in Columbus. Eight out of nine cuts and seven Top 10s makes him almost a bargain at $9,600. Look at this stat as a reason why he will light up Muirfield Village.
Xander Shauffele ($9,200) is priced $100 less than Rahm-bo and has 12 of 13 cuts with five Top 10s. He’s got this stat supporting him and another one. Historically, Xander plays well at Muirfield Village which is another reason to like him this week.
Avoid Tiger Woods ($9,000) this week. He’s been off and despite a perfect four for four record on tour this year and a ton of wins at Jack’s event in the past – there are just so many other studs to take this week in the A-list pool. Tiger always comes with a little extra price because of his mainstream popularity. Then again – this outlook would have been a sucky one last year at The Masters as Tiger is the best modern-day champion in recent golf history. I just don’t like him this week or most weeks.
I am also going to avoid my main-man, Brooks Koepka ($9,100) which is just agonizing. He started off so poorly last week that even with a massive come-back he couldn’t make the cut. Perhaps his length and some momentum from a good second round of ____ will power him up but I think there are better options out there at these prices.
B-List DFS Picks at The Memorial: 2020
You don’t pay us to tell you to pick Rory or DJ every week so let’s get into some more meaty, mid-level picks here in the $9,000 to $7,500-ish category also known as the B-list.
Again, because of the nature of the invitational field we’ve got sick choices here at The Memorial 2020 in the B-list. How about Tony Finau ($8,300) with 11 of 14 cuts and four top 10s. He has the length for Muirfield Village and has won 345 times there on Xbox.
It is no secret that love our 50-50 double downs so looking at a Sergio Garcia ($7,800) represents a very good value for someone with 11 of 12 cuts, three Top 10s. Look at his history at Muirfield in the last three years and see that he is having an affair with a female caddy who drives a light blue Subaru which should only improve his chances this week.
I want to prison shank Ian Poulter ($7,600) for his performance at The Ryder Cup at Medinah but at this price and 11 of 12 cuts and 69.9 points average per week. He could be your horse.
I am not sure what is with (Jordan Spieth $7,700) but he’s a conundrum. He’s got the numbers to love but left me hanging last week. He could be a boom or bust pick in a field where there are more safe options. Marc Leishman ($7,800) comes to mind.
C-List DFS Picks at The Memorial: 2020
How about the idea that 50 year old Phil Mickelson ($7,300) and Bubba Watson ($7,300) and they both hit bombs off the tee which is key at Muirfield Village. I have been riding Brandon Steele ($7,100) for weeks now and he’s got three Top 10s and 60.4 points per week. Solid at that price.
Maverick McNealy ($6,800) is a cut-making machine and at $6,800 and with almost 70 points per week he could be the type of player to go deep on. He did miss the cut last week but then again if went Top 10 – he wouldn’t be $6,800 would he?
Going really deep how about Frenchman, Victor Perez ($6,300) who has made a bunch of cuts on this side of the pond and is averaging over 70 points per DFS bout? Mark Hubbard ($6,700) is another cut-machine who puts up almost 70 points per week.
In the real world it isn’t cool to age discriminate but in DFS it sometimes is and at the bottom of the barrel the likes of Vijay Singh ($6,000), Tom Lehman ($6,000) and a personal favorite Ernie Els ($6,200) might be worthy on passing on despite The Big Easy’s 2/2 cuts on the big tour.
