While The PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open isn’t getting the attention that The World Golf Championships (Workday) are getting having been moved from Mexico to The Concession Golf Club in Florida – the event has been a launching pad for up-and-coming players the likes of Viktor Hovland and Tony Finau. This week’s field isn’t packed with the star power of the WGC but there are some hungry players looking for those 300 FedEx points, a pile of money, exemptions to the PGA and Players Championship as well as that year-long PGA Tour Card.
The course, The Grand Reserve Golf Club, is a Tom Kite design that is somewhat exposed to the ocean. The greens will be rolling tour fast but like The Concession, rough won’t be as much of an issue. The overall length of the course is nearing 7,500 which sounds scary for you and I but for these young guns, they will still be thinking about going for many of the par-5s in two.
The weekend weather just outside of San Juan, Puerto Rico is forecasted with a 24 percent chance of rain and moderate wind with temperatures in the low low-80s.

Ollie Schniederjans ($8,900) is playing well on the Korn Ferry Tour and the young man has a chance to make a real statement this week with a win in Puerto Rico. He’s not a bargain but considering the lack of more well-known players in this somewhat B-list field, he’s solid bet.
Greyson Sigg ($9,100) represents what we would call an A-list “value” considering he’s got six Top-10s and a good number of cuts made in full PGA Tour events as well as a very respective fantasy point average of 80.1. Sigg isn’t a household name but he’s trending up which is why we are picking him this week.
Brandon Wu ($9,200) reminds us a lot of the profile for Sigg. He’s a good bet to make the cut (7/10) and not unlikely to finish in the Top-10 (5/10). Considering you could spend $1,000 plus on other players in this field, we see a pretty good value here. Plus he is hungry as hell to get the upgrade from the Korn Ferry Tour to the big time.
Stephan Jaeger ($7,700) is yet another player in the fields in Puerto Rico that has no information on him on DraftKings but in digging a little deeper, he is rocking a 15/20 cuts made number and 5/20 Top-10s which isn’t half bad for $7,700 this week. I find often overseas players get a little disrespect in the pricing department and this could be the case here with Jaeger. The guy has won five times on the Korn Ferry Tour.
Anirban Lahri ($7,300) follows the model of Jaeger above in that he’s has a nearly perfect record making the cut on the PGA Tour (5/7) when get gets his chance. He doesn’t have as many Top-10s but this isn’t that strong of a field thus it should be easier to cash in. He’s never won on the Korn Ferry Tour but has 18 other wins worldwide.
Peter Uihlein ($7,400) has been a pick of ours in the past PGA Tour events and he stands out as a value in Puerto Rico at $7,400. 6/9 cuts made and a solid 62.7 fantasy points is very respectable for the price. He made the cut at Pebble which shows that he can cut it on the PGA Tour with a full field.
Alternate Picks…
Emiliano Grillo ($10,600) from Argentina is one of the most expensive plays on the board and we didn’t put him in the lineup above because it forced us to get even more off-the-grid with our lower priced players but he’s one of the more proven players in this week’s field including a PGA Tour win. You will have to find budget for him however and that might be tricky with an actual CUT in this field this week versus the no-cut WGC.
Ian Poulter ($10,400) still makes me sick when I think back to that Ryder Cup at Medinah but he too is one of the few high end picks in the field this week and I couldn’t fault you to build around him especially in a 50-50. He came in T-25 at The Masters, has won three times on the PGA Tour and 12 times overseas. He’s still a threat. He’s just not a value pick.
Jhonattan Vegas ($9,300) What happens in Vegas – stays in Vegas. (wait, that didn’t come out right). The Argentinian is towards the top of the mid-priced level but his 70.6 fantasy point average makes him somewhat tempting. The 6/10 cuts worries me a little bit. He’s got three PGA Tour victories and this could be a forth in a depleted field.
Bronson Burgoon ($7,600) name has popped up a few times this year when he has gotten a chance to play in the hard-to-enter PGA Tour events so far this year. He’s no lock on making the cut (5/10) like say Jim Furyk has been when he’s not out on the Champions Tour. His fantasy points are good and his price is right. T-15 at the RSM, T-37 at The American Express and T-42 at The Farmers in San Diego shows that he can make the cut and for a fair price.
Rhein Gibson ($7,000) is a buddy of mine so when I bash his 4/10 cuts made, I do it with love. Gibson has the record for the lowest score ever recorded in an event at 55 so the man can go low. Really low. His fantasy points are excellent at 71.9 considering his price. He also has played well in the Caribbean in the past. This is a high risk, high reward pick people.
Dickey Pride ($6,100) OK, you want to win a GPP right? Then you might just need some crazy sauce and this pick is just that. He’s been off the Tour for months but before that had a perfect cuts made record (7/7) and a very respectable 70 fantasy points per event. At this bargain basement price, you can try to pick up some of the bigger names in the field. Again, this is a super-high-risk pick, friends.
